Another difficult-to-find but influential work. I've remastered this book from its original scan; there may be some errors in the Black & White conversion, as the original scan was unfortunately both compressed and in sepia. There is also now a cover and OCR, though OCR often has a tough time on pages with sheet music, so do beware if you rely on TTS for reading.
### NOTES: from dust jacket
Contemporary Instrumental Techniques is a concise, comprehensive summary of avant-garde techniques, giving unsuspected insights into modern instrumental potentiality. This is the only definitive account of the use in modern music of conventional instruments in unconventional ways. Explanations of the various instrumental techniques and devices are followed by citations of the works of the most advanced contemporary composers of America, Europe, and the Orient. Until now many of these techniques have been available to musicians only through direct observation.
In Part 1 Gardner Read considers the devices and procedures that with only slight modification apply to all instruments. These include extended ranges, muting, glissandi, harmonics, percussive devices, microtones, amplification, and extra-musical devices. The idiomatic techniques and devices discussed in Part 2 refer to specific instruments or types of instruments: the woodwinds and brasses, percussion, harp and other plucked instruments, keyboard instruments, and strings. Although this book is devoted to the most recent and most radical innovations in playing techniques, the author often refers to the historical beginnings of technical devices that are now part of our classical heritage.
GARDNER READ was a well known composer in residence at Boston University. He is the author of several books, as well as many articles, music and book reviews. Mr. Read has won numerous prizes, awards, and commissions for his compositions, and his works have been performed by leading orchestras both in the United States and abroad.
