Victorian Engineering
L. T. C. Rolt
In this lively and wide-ranging survey, L.T.C. Rolt describes how, during the course of the nineteenth century, Britain became the workshop of the world, and gives fascinating accounts of such developments as
the building of the railways, the growth of ocean-going steamships and the introduction of gas and electricity. He looks at the individual achievements of, among others, Robert Stephenson, I.K. Brunei and Joseph Paxton, and at the crucial questions of how industrialization takes place and how it changes the environment.
Finally, Mr Rolt considers why the Victorians' mood of optimism turned to one of disillusionment; financial support became more hesitant, and many of the innovations of British engineering found their best expression in other countries. The Victorians, he argues, failed to come to terms with the consequences of industrialization - a failure we have perpetuated.
