Just as the fortunes of the De
Havilland company may be
attributed to the success of
their original DH 60 Moth,
so was the Hawker Aircraft
Limited also established as one of the
great British aircraft manufacturers of
the time on the prosperity brought by
their Hart bomber in company with
its many derivatives, the Hind, Hardy,
Audax, Osprey and Demon, plus the
single seat Fury fighter. Cumulatively,
this Hawker biplane line was the
subject of unprecedented orders in
the early and mid ’thirties. In fact, in
1933-34 Hawkers delivered to the
British armed services more machines
than had any other company since
the end of WW1 and had no less that
eight types in production.
During those years commencing
with the first deliveries of the Hart
in February 1930, no fewer than
seventeen Royal Air Force squadrons
flew Hawker biplanes types, while
additionally, there were more Hawker
machines in use by the Royal Navy’s
Fleet Air Arm than any other make.
such were the qualities of this line of
military aircraft led by the Hart in their
heyday.
